Akash Missile System, In a groundbreaking achievement, India has set a global precedent by demonstrating the capability of engaging four targets simultaneously with its indigenous Akash surface-to-air (SAM) weapon system.
This successful demonstration took place during Exercise Astrashakti 2023 at Suryalanka Air Force Station on December 12, as reported by defense officials.
Multitasking Power of Akash Missile
In the course of the exercise, the Indian Air Force (IAF) effectively neutralized four unmanned aerial targets simultaneously using a single Akash firing unit.
The targets, approaching in close formation from the same direction, were strategically split to attack defense assets from multiple directions at once.
System Deployment
The Akash firing unit utilized for this historic demonstration comprised the Firing Level Radar (FLR), Firing Control Centre (FCC), and two Akash Air Force launchers (AAFL) launchers, each equipped with five missiles.
Operational Execution
The targets were assigned to the Akash Firing Unit for neutralization, with firing commands issued to engage the four targets. Two Akash missiles were sequentially launched from two launchers, and the same launcher was assigned to the next two targets.
Within a brief timeframe, all four missiles were effectively launched and engaged, reaching their maximum range of around 30 km.
