P20 Presidency 2023: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla passed the Presidency torch to the Parliament of Brazil

Update On P20 Presidency

On October 14, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla successfully transferred the presidency of the G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) to Authur Ceasar Pereira de Lira, the President of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil. This transition marked the conclusion of the Ninth P20 Presidency, held at Yashobhoomi in Delhi.

The Ninth P20 Summit was organized by the Parliament of India in collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on October 13-14, 2023, in New Delhi. The summit centered around the theme “Parliaments for One Earth, One Family, One Future,” drawing inspiration from the ancient Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which emphasizes the concept that the world is one family.

During the summit, four high-level sessions were conducted, covering topics such as Accelerating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Sustainable Energy Transition, Women-led Development, and the Impact of Public Digital Platforms on Transforming People’s Lives.

Additionally, a Parliamentary Forum on “LiFE” (Lifestyle for Environment) was organized as a pre-summit event, to promote sustainable lifestyles and responsible patterns of production and consumption.

On the second day of the Summit, two sessions delved into the subjects of “Mainstreaming Gender Equality: From Women’s Development to Women-led Development” and “Transformation in Peoples’ Lives through Public Digital Platforms.”

On the opening day of the Ninth G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit, on October 13, the presiding officers of G20 Parliaments and invited countries unanimously endorsed a Joint Statement reaffirming their commitment to collaborate and make a meaningful parliamentary contribution to the G20 process.

The Joint Statement underscored the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue as catalysts for promoting international peace, prosperity, and harmony, including support for peaceful conflict resolution.

The Presiding Officers commended India for the inauguration of its new Parliament building, reflecting the country’s rich tradition of people’s participation in governance and decision-making. They also applauded the Indian Parliament for passing the “Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam,” which ensures the reservation of one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and State legislatures for women.

The global event saw participation from 25 speakers, 10 Deputy Speakers, and 50 members of Parliament, among others.

The Ninth P20 Summit represents the culmination of a collective vision of Presiding Officers of G20 Parliaments, which had its origins in a Consultative meeting in 2010. India’s aim during the P20 Summit was to provide consensus-based solutions to complex global issues, fostering a more inclusive, peaceful, and equitable world in alignment with the spirit of the Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam theme.
